New Delhi, Aug 11: The government has sanctioned smart metering works covering 19.79 crore electricity consumers under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), giving a major push to the modernisation of India’s power distribution network.
The programme aims to replace conventional meters with smart meters that can digitally record and communicate electricity consumption. The objective is to make billing more accurate, improve transparency and give consumers greater control over how they use electricity.
For households, smart meters can make it easier to understand daily electricity consumption and identify periods when power use is particularly high. Better access to consumption information can encourage families to avoid unnecessary usage and manage their electricity expenses more carefully.
Smart metering is also expected to reduce problems linked to manual meter reading, including delays and human errors. Digital consumption records can help consumers receive bills based more accurately on actual electricity use.
For power distribution companies, the technology provides better information about electricity flows across the network. This can help utilities improve billing and collection, identify losses and respond more quickly to unusual consumption patterns.
