India, 4th March  2024: As the global prevalence of overweight and obesity continues to rise, it becomes increasingly crucial to understand the multifaceted nature of this health challenge. To commemorate World Obesity Day on March 4th, Practo, a leading integrated healthcare company, organized a conclave led by Dietitian Prerana Solanki and Dietitian Sonal Sureka. The webinar highlighted proactive measures to address the often-overlooked issue of obesity and its associated health risks.

The conclave emphasized the close connection between obesity and gut health, underscoring the significance of good digestion for overall well-being. The 2023 study revealed that India has an estimated 350 million people with obesity and it is projected that around two-thirds of the global disease burden will be linked to chronic non-communicable diseases.

Dt. Prerana Solanki, consults on Practo, commented, “Obesity is a multifaceted problem influenced by various factors, including biological, social, and environmental elements. While genetics may contribute, factors such as basal metabolic rate, thyroid function, and certain syndromes also play a role. To effectively combat obesity, it is crucial to adopt a comprehensive approach that addresses both individual behaviors and societal influences. This holistic strategy entails promoting healthy lifestyles, advocating for balanced diets, prioritizing regular physical activity, and managing stress effectively.”

Dt. Sonal Sureka, consults on Practo, added, “As nutritionists, we stress the importance of addressing systemic factors that contribute to unhealthy choices. Introducing a holistic wellness approach is essential. This is why we recommend the S.H.I.E.L.D approach, which focuses on S- Sleep (ensuring adequate sleep of 6-8 hours), H- Handling stress, I- Interactions and building relationships, E- Engaging in physical activities, L- Learning a new skill, D- Diet. By integrating the S.H.I.E.L.D approach into daily routines, individuals can achieve improved lifestyles and overall well-being.”

In addition to these interventions, during Practo’s Gut Connection Conclave battling with stereotypes associated with obesity was also discussed. It is crucial to shift cultural narratives and foster empathy to create a more supportive environment for individuals struggling with their weight. This involves recognizing the complex nature of obesity, moving beyond blame, and promoting understanding and compassion. By addressing both individual behaviors and societal structures, lasting change can be achieved, leading to improved health outcomes for communities worldwide.
