New Delhi, Aug 12: India’s clean-energy transition is increasingly reaching households, with the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana driving a rapid expansion of rooftop solar across the country.
The scheme has received 7.77 million applications since its launch in February 2024, while 4.19 million rooftop solar systems had been installed as of August 5, 2026. The installations have created nearly 14,895 MW of rooftop solar capacity and covered around 5.04 million households. The Centre has released about ₹28,390.50 crore in financial assistance under the programme.
The numbers point to a significant shift in India’s energy landscape. Solar power is moving beyond large utility-scale projects and increasingly becoming part of everyday household electricity use.
From Consumers to Energy Producers
For millions of families, a rooftop solar system offers a practical way to generate part of their own electricity.
A home that once depended entirely on power supplied through the grid can now produce electricity during daylight hours. Where grid regulations permit, surplus generation can also be supplied back to the electricity network.
Individually, each rooftop system may represent a modest amount of generation. Collectively, millions of such systems can create a substantial distributed clean-energy network.
This model is particularly relevant as India’s electricity demand continues to grow with urbanisation, manufacturing, electric mobility and the expansion of digital infrastructure.
Lower Power Costs, Greater Household Flexibility
The appeal of rooftop solar is not limited to its environmental benefits. For households, the possibility of reducing electricity bills is an important part of the decision to install a system.
Lower energy expenses can give families greater financial flexibility. Money that would otherwise go towards electricity bills can potentially be used for household consumption, education, savings or other priorities.

The growth of residential solar is also creating an expanding economic ecosystem.
Every installation requires solar modules, inverters, electrical equipment, mounting structures, wiring and installation services. Once installed, systems require maintenance and monitoring.

The latest figures also show that rooftop solar adoption is spreading across several major states.
Gujarat recorded the highest number of installations at 780,553, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 729,337 and Maharashtra with 711,190.
Gujarat also led in installed rooftop capacity at nearly 2,925 MW, followed by Maharashtra at around 2,608 MW and Uttar Pradesh at approximately 2,456 MW.
The broad geographical spread suggests that rooftop solar is becoming a nationwide energy opportunity rather than a development concentrated in a handful of regions.
Solar Growth and India’s Economic Future
The expansion of rooftop solar comes at a time when India is seeking to increase renewable-energy capacity while supporting rapid economic growth.
A stronger domestic solar ecosystem can stimulate investment in manufacturing, installation, financing and technology. It can also create skilled and semi-skilled employment as the number of installations increases.

PM Surya Ghar is changing the way households participate in India’s energy system. What was once a centralised model, with consumers purchasing electricity from large power stations, is gradually becoming more distributed.

With more than 5 million households covered and nearly 14.9 GW of rooftop capacity installed, the programme has already reached a scale capable of influencing India’s broader energy landscape.
