Expensive Firecrackers Could Mean Less Diwali Pollution, Says Odisha Minister Krushna Chandra Patra

Bhubaneswar, Nov 4 (UDN): Could expensive firecrackers help make Diwali celebrations less polluting? Odisha Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra believes the rising prices of crackers may actually discourage excessive bursting and contribute to reducing air pollution.

Expensive Firecrackers Could Mean Less Diwali Pollution, Says Odisha Minister Krushna Chandra Patra

Reacting to concerns over the increasing cost of firecrackers ahead of Diwali, the minister said higher prices could prompt people to limit their purchases, indirectly helping reduce the pollution associated with large-scale fireworks.

He observed that bursting firecrackers in excessive quantities contributes significantly to air pollution and that a reduction in their consumption could help minimise the environmental impact of the festival.

Minister Appeals For Green Crackers

While acknowledging that the government cannot completely prevent people from bursting firecrackers during Diwali, Patra urged citizens to celebrate responsibly by choosing green crackers.

He stressed that environmental concerns should not be overlooked during festivities and called for restraint in the use of conventional firecrackers.

Green crackers, designed to reduce emissions and particulate pollution compared with conventional fireworks, could offer a relatively less polluting alternative, although they are not pollution-free.

Licensed Traders Only To Be Allowed

The minister also made it clear that the state government would keep a close watch on firecracker sales to prevent illegal trading and ensure compliance with prescribed regulations.

According to Patra, only licensed traders would be permitted to sell firecrackers. The authorities would monitor the market to ensure that sales take place in accordance with the applicable rules.

The government is also concerned about reports of traders allegedly charging excessive prices during the festive season.

Action Against Overpricing

Addressing consumer concerns over the price hike, Patra said the Supply Department would examine complaints of overcharging by firecracker sellers.

He assured that if consumers reported instances of traders exploiting the festive demand to charge unreasonable prices, the department would conduct an inquiry and take appropriate action.

The minister maintained that while people should be free to celebrate Diwali, excessive use of firecrackers should be avoided in the larger interest of public health and environmental protection.

Balancing Festive Celebrations With Environmental Responsibility

With firecracker prices and pollution emerging as concerns ahead of the festival, the government’s message is centred on responsible celebrations, regulated sales and greater awareness among consumers.

Patra’s remarks have also brought attention to the possible link between affordability and firecracker consumption, though the actual impact of higher prices on pollution will depend on purchasing patterns and the extent to which people reduce their use.

As Odisha prepares for Diwali, the minister has urged people to celebrate with restraint, prefer green crackers and remain mindful of the environmental consequences of their festivities.
