Kerala Explores Floating Solar and Battery Storage to Build a More Resilient Power System

Kerala is exploring new ways to meet its growing electricity requirements as rising demand puts additional pressure on the state’s power infrastructure. The government is looking at floating solar projects and battery-based energy storage as potential solutions to expand renewable power generation and improve the reliability of electricity supply.

The growing demand has highlighted the need for Kerala to diversify its power sources. The state has traditionally relied significantly on hydropower, but creating additional large-scale hydropower capacity can be a lengthy process because of geographical, environmental and project-related constraints.

Floating solar offers an alternative by allowing photovoltaic panels to be installed on suitable reservoirs and other water bodies. This approach can generate clean electricity while reducing the need for large areas of land, an important consideration for a state where land availability is limited.

Energy storage is also becoming an important part of the proposed strategy. Solar generation is naturally concentrated during daylight hours, while electricity demand can remain high during the evening. Battery Energy Storage Systems can store excess electricity generated during periods of strong solar output and release it when demand rises.

The combination of solar generation and storage could therefore help Kerala make better use of renewable energy while improving the flexibility of its power network. It may also reduce the pressure to purchase electricity from external sources during periods of high demand.

The proposed expansion could have wider economic benefits as well.
