New Delhi, Dev 15: On National Energy Conservation Day, which reaffirms India’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible energy practices, Cairn Oil & Gas, part of Vedanta Group, reflects its commitment of turning inspiration into meaningful change through its Sustainability Report for the financial year 2025 titled Inspiring Actions, Fostering Impact.

As per the report, Cairn reduced 89,770 tonnes of CO2e emission from its operations, which is equivalent to planting 4.5 million trees per year. This achievement reflects Cairn’s sustained, multi-year push towards driving responsible energy production. Over the past five years, the company has conserved 3.11 million GJ of energy and committed to a 30% reduction in absolute methane emissions as part of its Net Zero Carbon ambition. Further progressing on natured based solutions, Cairn planted nearly 800,000 trees and mangroves to develop carbon sinks and support regional biodiversity.
Cairn has also recently attained the prestigious Gold Standard Pathway status for reporting year 2025 under United Nations’ Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0)—the world’s leading methane reporting and mitigation framework. Cairn is the first and only upstream company in India to join OGMP 2.0. As a member company, it has submitted a credible and detailed implementation plan to reduce methane emissions. This milestone further strengthens Cairn’s mission to decarbonise operations while advancing transparent climate reporting.
Cairn was also the first company to commence production from a Discovered Small Field (DSF) block in Northeast through its Hazarigaon block in Golaghat district. The natural gas produced here is already enabling tea gardens to shift from coal to cleaner, more efficient fuel. Gas also powers 100 CNG buses operating in Guwahati, strengthening the State Government’s push towards greener mobility infrastructure. Given the region’s extraordinary biodiversity and ecological sensitivity, the availability of natural gas as a cleaner fuel alternative is enabling progress without compromising nature.
As Assam advances its sustainable development goals, these milestones reinforce Cairn’s ongoing contribution to the state through cleaner energy adoption, community empowerment, and conservation initiatives. From helping tea estates transition to clean fuel, to accelerating green public mobility in Guwahati, to supporting women-led handloom enterprises and wildlife protection efforts, Cairn continues to drive growth that is both inclusive and environmentally conscious.
Northeast continues to feature prominently in Cairn’s sustainability agenda, with a range of initiatives planned for Protecting the environment, Preserving the culture, as it remains committed to Producing hydrocarbons from the region. The company has made a transformative impact on more than 195 million people across India through education, health, livelihood and community development projects. With continued efforts in methane reduction, clean-energy transition, water stewardship, and conservation, Cairn remains committed to supporting India’s energy security while nurturing ecosystems and communities across the region.
